It’s the journey that counts
You might have heard in other contexts that the journey is as important, if not more, than the destination. This is also true with process and operations simulation as there are many steps involved in building simulation models and they each have their own unique value. Every one of these steps involves questioning what we know about the system we want to improve. Step 1 – Precisely defining the problem and the questions that need answering Determine system boundaries, perfor

Simulation of Hospital Expansion and New Layout
We have not one, but two hospitals who are planning a building expansion. One has 3,000 employees and 600 beds. The other has 2,000 employees and 450 beds. Part of the expansion is a plan to move some outpatient clinics to the ground floor to reduce vertical movements that are currently a bottleneck. The purpose of the project is to simulate ground floor traffic during a typical day with the proposed layout to identify potential problems and opportunities for improvement.

A small price to pay to reduce uncertainty before investment
A frozen food manufacturer wants to improve the productivity at one of its facilities which produces 20 different food products in different packaging formats for a total of 200 SKUs. These products are made, bagged and boxed on 11 processing lines each ending with a manual palletizing station. In some configurations, products are not boxed on the processing lines but left in bags and frozen in order to be later mixed and boxed as “combo packs” at an another production stat
