Simulation modeling is the art and science of virtually reproducing a real life system in order to analyze it and test improvements without disturbing the real world. Or maybe the system doesn't exist yet but you need to design it.
I fell in love with simulation modeling in university when I first learned about its existence. Of course, computers have improved a lot in 25 years and correspondingly has simulation. Now I create 3D models of factories, hospitals and other systems that are just like video games.
That's one of the reasons why I love it. I'm creating virtual game-like models that people relate to because they recognize their work environment. It makes it so much easier to get them involved and confident in the results of the analysis.
Because as fun as it can be, results are what simulation is all about. Running a year's worth of operations in a few minutes. Choosing the best schedule for next week by testing it before the week even starts. Testing a proposed material handling system before investing a lot of money.
These are just a few examples of applications that keep me busing doing what I love, simulation modeling.
